INDIA TO NORTH PAKISTAN TRIP; THE KARAKORAM ROUTE

A journey of peace and friendship to reflect the deep historical and human bond of the sub-continent. This is a remarkable discovery tour beyond the political borders in the fascinating countryside, tribal life style, beautiful panoramic vistas, rich monuments and fairy tale bazaars.

Best time Mid May to Mid September

Day 1 : Arrive Delhi ( India ) in the midnight, pick-up with assistance and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.

Day 2 : Delhi sightseeing……………. O/n Hotel.

Day 3 : Delhi to Amritsar, train (ETD-07.20 hrs/ ETA-13.05 hrs) Arrive Amritsar and transfer to hotel, evening visit to Golden temple. O/n Hotel.

Note ; This train runs everyday except Wednesday.

Day 4: Amritsar to Lahore ( Pakistan ) by surface Receive at Wagah border. Wagah border to Lahore transfer takes about 01 hr. Evening visit to Anarkali & other bazaars of Lahore. O/n Hotel.

Day 5: Lahore historical tour, full day, visit Lahore Fort, Museum, architectures of Badshahi, and Wazir Khan Mosques. O/n Hotel.

Day 6: Today, after breakfast by surface to Islamabad Rawalpindi about 6 hrs drive .transfer to Hotel Shalimar ( highway 288km) . Afternoon visit Lok Virsa Folk heritage museum and sightseeing of Islamabad. O/n Hotel.

Day 7: Today we start early for Peshawar enroute we visit Taxila, the renowned Gandhara archaeological site which dates back to 500 B.C. Linking the ancient trade routes between China, India, Central Asia and the west Taxila was the cultural crossroads of the ancient world. Here you find the remains of three great cities and Buddhist monasteries and Museum . Proceed to Peshawar. Check into hotel Afternoon sightseeing tour of the old city with its fascinating gold, silver and copper bazaars centuries old. We then stroll through the Qissa Khawani bazaar, street of the story tellers visit Mohabat Khan Mosque built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan . O/N Pearl Continental hotel (05 star)

Day 8: Drive over the Malakand pass past Churchill's picket where Winston Churchill was stationed during the Pathan tribal uprisings, drive on to Dir then over the Lowari pass 3118m. From the pass you have a nice view of the mountains deep into Afghanistan .

Drive on to our private family Fort at Ayun, 12 hrs drive. This was once a fort of the ruling family of Chitral and is now developed into a farm, covering an area of around 50 acres. It is situated in a scenic setting above the Ayun valley at 1370m, giving you a 360 degree panoramic view , dominated by the majestic Tirich Mir, 7708m, the highest peak of the Hindukush . O/N Ayun Fort.

Day : 9 Rest at Ayun Fort and have a short walk along the Ayun stream exploring the village activities. Or an afternoon at the farm house … talking herbs and plants with Prince Khush Ahmed ul Mulk. This was once a fort of the ruling family of Chitral and is now developed into a farm, covering an area of around 50 acres. It is situated in a scenic setting above the Ayun valley at 1370 m, giving you a 360 degree panoramic view, dominated by the majestic Tirich Mir, 7708m, the highest peak of the Hindukush. Encircling this is the farm and an orchard with apricot, peaches, apples, grapes, plums and pomegranates. On one side of the orchard a sheer cliff drops to the gushing blue Ayun stream full of fish. Hanging on the cliff top is the herbal and botanical garden of Prince Khush Ahmed ul Mulk the owner. The farm house has its own supply of clear spring water and electricity from a small hydroelectric station on the premises. Here, besides the regular cuisine on demand, you are also provided with local home-made traditional food that cannot be served in hotels. The farm is organically run and produce fresh milk, poultry, fruit, herbs and vegetables besides wheat, rice and maize. O/N Ayun Fort (guest house-standard)

Day 10 : Drive to the Kalash valley of Rumbur to spend the day amongst this pagan tribe supposed to be descendants of Alexander the great still living in their ancient ways in their walnut laden valleys with their unique culture. You can mix freely with these peaceful people who will happily show you around their beehive shaped villages of wooden houses or have a walk as far as Sheikhanan Deh where the Nuristani tribes live O/N Ayun Fort.

Day 11 :Visit Kalash center and ethonogical Museum of the Kalash in Brun Bumboret valley where their history, folk heritage and kalash handicrafts are displayd. Visit jestakan and burial sites in krakal hamlet . The Kalash religion is based on myths and superstitions that relate to the relationship between the human soul and the universe based on ancestor worship, as well as 12 gods and goddesses . This relationship, according to Kalash mythology, needs its manifestation in music and dance, which also contribute to the pleasure of gods and goddesses. In their festivals music and dance are performed not as an entertainment item, but as a religious ritual . The colorful traditional dress is worn at all times by females which includes a black robe, an embroidered long cap decorated with cowrie shells, ornaments and beads. As you visit their wooden hamlets clinging to each other on the hills and museum you are taken back in time . O/N Bumboret PTDC hotel. (standard)

Day 12: Proceed to Chitral. Day visit Chitral town , the busy bazaar, overshadowed by the massif of Tirich Mir (7780), is a friendly Aladdin's cave of semi precious stones, local cloth, hats and old military medals and semi precious stones & rugs brought by Afghan traders from Badakshan & Wakhan. . It is the town's history which helps create its wild atmosphere. Chitral Fort (scene of a 48 day siege of a British Force in 1895), and the 19th century Shahi Mosque are two of the many historically important buildings that you can see. Day 13 : We will depart early morning driving along the Yarkhun river valley for the ancient town of Mastuj. An exciting jeep ride, which takes about 5 hours following the course of the wild Mastuj River, takes us to the historic town & fort. . O/N Hindukush Heights Chalets

Day 14 : Drive from Mastuj, along the Sor Laspur stream, to the broad and grassy col of Shandur pass and lake at (3734m). Each year there is a historic polo match played out at the pass, between teams from Gilgit and Chitral which attracts thousand of spectators from far and wide. Dropping down beside to Ghizar River we pass the village of Barsat, teru and Handrap, en route to our hotel at Khalti lake Phander 6 hrs drive.. O/N PTDC hotel Phander .

Day 15: This is an excellent place beside Khalti Lake, with good fishing and swimming potential so you could start late at leisure before you start towards Gilgit. You then descend the Ghizar River to Gupis and drive out of this valley then following the course of the Gilgit River to Gilgit, the capital of Pakistan's Northern Areas. Beyond Gupis, the road is better than we have used to over the last week. En route to Gilgit about 4 hrs , We pass through two old kingdoms; Gupis and then Punial, where there are numerous small villages before you reach Gilgit 3 / 4 hrs, O/ N Serena Gilgit

Day 16 : We have time to visit the Buddhist site of Kargah before we take the journey along the most spectacular section of the KKH, through the historic Hunza Valley to the capital of the region. Karimabad. that fabled Shangrila where men are reputed to live beyond 100 years. The landscape on either side of the road as we drive north and then east from Gilgit is barren apart from the odd terraced oasis around a village and excepting the intensively irrigated plain beneath Karimabad. This section of the road offers amazing views of the majestic Rakaposhi (7788m), which rises above the east (right hand) side of the road. 3 hrs drive . O/N Serena Hotel

Day 17 : Rest and explore Hunza Karimabad free day on your own. Or you may choose to simply wander around, taking in some of the sight of this remarkable settlement, which was once the seat of the Mir (ruler) of Hunza. The views from Karimabad, of the Hunza Valley are legendary. One of the options that we have is to walk up to the Baltit Fort, a 900 years old building with a Tibetan architectural style, in a location that offers exceptional views across the Hunza valley. Also close by is the Altit Fort , even older at 1000 years, which sits on top of a sheer 300 meter cliff above the Hunza River. O/ N Serena Hotel

Day 18 : We visit Passu Glacier and Batura Glacier 56 Kilometer long, one of the longest Glaciers outside the polar regions and spend the afternoon exploring Gulmit village . The village offers some easy short walks including a small village museum besides the old summer palace of the mir of Hunza. Hotel . O/ N Silk Route Lodge.

Day 19 : Descending down the Karakorum highway we head down the Indus valley, passing beneath the snowy massif of Nanga Parbat, and have excellent views of this . the ninth highest peak on the earth to reach Chilas, which was once an important staging post on an ancient trading route. On of the area's claims to fame is the large number of rock carvings that can be found on the banks of the indus, below the town. The oldest of theses inscriptions, which typically show animals and hunters, date from 7000 years ago and are thought to have been made by pilgrims and traders. Overnight at Hotel Shangrila.

Day 20 : Heading southward, we will take an alternative route back to Rawalpindi, which involves crossing into the Kagan valley through Babusar pass .We drive over the pass, which at 4173 mattress is the highest point of the entire route, and offers brilliant views of the Kaghan valley laid out before us, and of the mountains of Kashmir to the south. A long and slow descent from the pass, through the summer pastures of semi nomadic Gujar tribesmen, and passing the turquoise Lulusar Lake leads to our hotel at Naran 8 hrs drive. Overnight in PTDC hotel. (standard).

Day 21: Today visit Saif ul Muluk Lake one has to make a side trip involving 1 hrs up then same time descend to Kaghan. We could then descend the picturesque Kaghan valley, past Balakot, we drive on through Abbottabad, reaching Rawalpindi in the evening. About 7 /8 hrs drive. Shalimar Hotel. (04 star).

Day 22: Today we board flight Rawalpindi Lahore to Delhi , arrive Delhi and transfer to hotel Uppal's Orchid. (05 star deluxe).
Late evening transfer to international airport flight to Belguim.
